Pumpkin Hollow Barn Raising

The mission of the Pumpkin Hollow Barn Raising Capital Campaign is to restore and enhance the iconic barn at Pumpkin Hollow Retreat Center, ensuring its structural integrity and aesthetic beauty for future generations. Through community engagement and generous support, we aim to preserve this vital space that helps foster spiritual growth, fellowship, and connection with nature.
Pumpkin Hollow Barn Raising
The Barn Raising Campaign involves a comprehensive renovation that focuses on removing and replacing the structure's existing siding and trim boards. This project includes supplying labor, materials, and equipment for the task and preparing new materials through staining—one coat before installation and another after. Additional work encompasses door repairs and rebuilding, as well as the proper disposal of waste generated during the process. Contractors will account for necessary adjustments to electrical service lines and conduits as they are encountered. Additionally, if basket lifts or Lull-type forklifts are used, the grass on three sides of the barn will be restored to maintain the surrounding landscape.
Case for Support
The Pumpkin Hollow Barn originally built elsewhere in the Hudson Valley and moved to the property in 1882, is most likely more than a century and a half old. Over the years, the barn's wood siding has been maintained in sections, with parts replaced and restored as needed and as funds allowed. Now, in 2025, the barn siding needs to be replaced entirely to preserve the structural integrity of the building. In
addition, a foundational beam needs to be lifted, and a concrete footing must be installed beneath it. Beyond its historic and aesthetic value and role as a retreat center meeting space, the barn must remain structurally sound to support the array of solar panels on the roof.
Pumpkin Hollow operates on a limited budget. Each fall, we hold an annual appeal to assist with the operational upkeep of the grounds and buildings. In 2024, this appeal raised $21,870, which will be allocated toward renovations of cabins 9 and 22, a new roof for cabin 10, and the ongoing management of fallen ash trees. A new source of resources is needed for repairs to the barn.
Fundraising Goal
The project's financial target is $150,000. This amount will be raised through a Capital Campaign Plan, with all funds specifically allocated for the barn project. The budget will cover various expenses, including materials, labor, and painting, among other necessities.
Campaign Timeline
The campaign is set to begin in Spring 2025 and conclude in late Spring 2026. Key milestones include Board Approval, which has already taken place, followed by the official Kick-Off on June 1. A Summer Square Dance is scheduled for July 26, 2025, and a Fall Harvest Line Dance is planned for September 6, 2025. A ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled for late spring or early summer 2026.
